Good evening folks,
I was looking to see if anyone had any ideas as to what these 1911 grips are made of? I was told 15 years ago they were Mammoth ivory. I have looked all over the internet and have not seen a set like them online or anywhere else. I have poked around on the grips in multiple spots with a red hot scribe and I can rule out plastic or wood, it did not melt or leave a mark on the grips. Any assistance identifying the material would be huge.

thanks in advance northeast community.

Those look like they are either fossilized or stabilized. but I think you may just have Siberian Mammoth Ivory from these other pictures I found. Just taken on a different grain from the set you have. 8872D7EB-AB48-415C-8104-0F556EE27C42.jpeg 1E960A44-A153-4093-94E4-B313834B2C52.jpeg

Petrified redwood ?

What are your plans with the grips ? dibs if you dont own a 1911 and are going to sell them.

thanks guys for the fast response I never thought of fossilized wood or even to look it up. Not sure what stabilized is but I’ll do more research. I could only wish I had one of those Wilson combats to mount this pair on, then again those grips look much nicer than mine

Very showy. Top drawer grips you got there. Looks to be agatized.

They didn't match what I saw in an image search, which looked more plain and bone layering more prominent. Not to say they're not mammoth tusk ivory. They certainly could be genuine.

Looks like mammoth tusk. Just cut that way to show the most “ bark”. Take a look at SK Grips he makes a large variety of mammoth grips.

Move upscale a bit, perhaps to a Derr, if you want a gun to be worthy of those grips.
