The FBI does this also. Chronicle ran story about the Citizen's Academy run by the Boston Division. I think they do one night a week for several weeks. It's mostly a PR / networking / recruiting opportunity for the Bureau. If anyone ever has the opportunity to participate, they'd be foolish not to.
