If I buy a long gun from an New Hampshire resident on GunBroker can the current owner go through a dealer and transfer ownership? I've heard of having to transfer through an FFL holder for out of state sales but not for in state.

No different that the transfer you and I did. Contact him and tell him which parking lot you'd like to meet in. I'm not sure why he'd insist on going through an FFL, but you shouldn't have to pay for it.

I agree. I think it's the big bad ATF he's afraid of even though there's no need.

There is nothing to be afraid of from the ATF. They have nothing to do with in-state transfer. The only reason I can imagine he would want to go through an FFL is to force a NICS check on you, to make sure he's not selling to a bad guy. But since that's about his concerns, then he should be willing to fork over the $$. And he should be able to find someone to transfer it for less than $35. Push back a little, and ask him to show you why he feels he needs to go through an FFL.

BTW, whatcha get?
