I have not been a bird (quail and pheasant) hunter for sometime. Figure about 15 years. I am looking to get back into it and would love to get a dog. I have been trying to decide between an English Pointer and a German Shorthair. I am leaning towards the English Pointer.

My only concern I have is not being able to properly train the dog. I research everything to death. So I figure that getting a couple of DVD's my be my first start. Do any of you guys have any type of suggestions on DVD or suggestions as far as training goes. Thanks!

George Hickox has some good material.

One important thing you need to consider if you are considering "going it alone". Birds. The dog will need to be exposed to lots and lots of birds. Most folks can't do that on their own and find the best way is to join a club or training group. There are also pros that will "train the trainer" so to speak and can get you access to birds.

You might want to consider buying a "started" dog. The definition varies by trainer but usually you know the dog will hunt, point, etc. They have been exposed to birds, sometimes a lot, shot over etc. A good trainer will let you see the dog work birds and may help you with training problems too. I just got a started pointer and could not be happier. I've trained several of my own over the years, and for me anyway, the started dog is the way to go.

No, I ended up getting in contact with some guys that breed dogs for trials. Lots of dogs that wont make the cut in the trials end up with hunters. Thats the route I took and so far am pretty happy. The dog I got was 2 yrs old, and almost finished with his training, but had not been hunted. This is his first season hunting and he is getting lots of birds shot over him, so he should only get better with experience.

Gotta love a Springer! That dog in the back is a dead ringer for a dog I had for 14 yrs. I loved hunting pheasants with her, she was absolute death on them!
