I still do it to unload my gun, but only when I am clearing the weapon, and locking the slide back. If I am clearing a jam, it only makes sense to do it from the rear of the weapon so you can let your problem round eject.

The self defense trainers teach this way of clearing the gun, other than clearing a failure to fire.

Well, a lot of trainers teach cycling the slide overhand (I do it that way most of the time), but they all caution you to keep your hand clear of the ejection port. The problem isn't in the method, but the execution.

I'm guilty of doing it if I want to extract a chambered round, but on a dud i'll wait about 10 seconds and pull back the slide with index finger and thumb making sure the ejection port is clear. Guess I should do it that way no matter what from now on.
