Just google the Vermont statutes, at the legislature website.
To sum it up: everything is legal except silencers. Any NFA item other than silencers is legal as long as you comply with the federal law. No restrictions of any sort on guns you may own, mag capacity, etc. No permit needed to either own or carry. You can't carry in school buildings or vehicles, courts, or state institutions. You can carry in your local town or city hall or other local government owned buildings, generally. The law is vague on defining schools and is interpreted often to include colleges/universities (though a first offense is a misdemeanor not a felony). Of course you also have the federal rules against post offices, etc. also. You can have a loaded handgun in a vehicle but not a loaded rifle or shotgun (but there's no other requirement on rifles/shotguns in vehicles other than that they be unloaded...you can just throw them in the car, ammo next to it, and it's legal...). Local governments may only regulate the discharge of firearms, otherwise, there is state pre-emption. Certain towns/cities are hostile to gun owners and occasionally try to pass ordinances they legally have no right to do so but if they enforce it it'll be thrown out in court (and then you have an illegal arrest case for a lawsuit against them...). Rutland City, Brattleboro, Burlington, and Montpelier are the ones I know of as being rather hostile (I was illegally detained last year in Rutland while open carrying...). Nonetheless, the laws are on our side, at the moment, not on the side of anti politicians and cops.
However I should add the knife laws are a bit more restrictive than the gun laws...no switchblades over a certain length, and some others are illegal also. Also a law on brass knuckles. Though most people don't even know these laws exist and they're minor offenses unless you use them on someone illegally...
