I live in California....I know, I know. But I'm thinking of moving to Vermont. Can anyone direct me to a legit website that can give me a up to date list of gun laws? Specifically the laws around assault rifles as I have wanted to own an AR for quite some time but for obvious reasons......yeah. And from what I've gathered there will be some separate laws for each town, which I'll head down to the PD to inquire about. But if this information is available online (and free?!) that would be nice :). Thanks guys.

There aren't any. Vermont allows nearly everything except suppressors. It's a "free state" as far as gun laws are concerned. A permit is not even
required for concealed carry.

There are no "separate laws for each town" in VT. There may be discharge ordinances, but that would probably be about it.

Mike, you beat me to it.

Mr Goodbar, VT is gunowner's paradise... well, except for the suppressor fetish that they have. Afraid of poachers. If you can deal with the liberals in the big cities, you're golden there. Oh, yeah... and the winters.

But guns? I think that their only gun law goes something like "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed".

a good number of liberals there, but the good kind, not the MA kind. I want to move there.

excellent

By laws I meant individual ordinances, such as discharge ordinances.

"State law preempts local governments from regulating the possession, ownership, transfer, carrying, registration or licensing of firearms."

I didn't think there were too many laws, but I want all information available to make sure I abide by all applicable laws.

No suppressors, eh? Not at all? I guess I can't be too picky though considering I'm coming from a place that doesn't allow 11 rnd mags....

Is there, a published book say, that has all or what few gun laws there are that someone can recommend to me? I like to have such literature and do for CA. Thanks.

Just google the Vermont statutes, at the legislature website.

To sum it up: everything is legal except silencers. Any NFA item other than silencers is legal as long as you comply with the federal law. No restrictions of any sort on guns you may own, mag capacity, etc. No permit needed to either own or carry. You can't carry in school buildings or vehicles, courts, or state institutions. You can carry in your local town or city hall or other local government owned buildings, generally. The law is vague on defining schools and is interpreted often to include colleges/universities (though a first offense is a misdemeanor not a felony). Of course you also have the federal rules against post offices, etc. also. You can have a loaded handgun in a vehicle but not a loaded rifle or shotgun (but there's no other requirement on rifles/shotguns in vehicles other than that they be unloaded...you can just throw them in the car, ammo next to it, and it's legal...). Local governments may only regulate the discharge of firearms, otherwise, there is state pre-emption. Certain towns/cities are hostile to gun owners and occasionally try to pass ordinances they legally have no right to do so but if they enforce it it'll be thrown out in court (and then you have an illegal arrest case for a lawsuit against them...). Rutland City, Brattleboro, Burlington, and Montpelier are the ones I know of as being rather hostile (I was illegally detained last year in Rutland while open carrying...). Nonetheless, the laws are on our side, at the moment, not on the side of anti politicians and cops.

However I should add the knife laws are a bit more restrictive than the gun laws...no switchblades over a certain length, and some others are illegal also. Also a law on brass knuckles. Though most people don't even know these laws exist and they're minor offenses unless you use them on someone illegally...

I can sum it up pretty easy for you.

Can't have a silencer/suppressor, can't have a loaded rifle or shotgun in a motor vehicle.

CCW is not restricted, but, you should be able to prove who you are (ID on you) and you have to be legal to possess it in order to CCW it.

Give me specific communities, I can find out about discharge ordinances. I recommend Addison County over Chittenden County, due to the population density and discharge restrictions.

The ONLY things a town/city are allowed to enact are the discharge ordinances, nothing else (no matter how hard Burlington's Socialist Mayor tries to do otherwise).

Avoid Burlington, and the surrounding communities as well.

And, I live here, so I have a pretty good understanding of the law here.

Arlington is pretty much out in the sticks. Not a bad thing.

I doubt they have a discharge ordinance, but call the town clerk to make sure.

When they get done laughing, you'll know they don't have one.
