DDOS = Distributed Denial of Service Attack

Just imagine that someone has control over thousands of computers and tells them all, at the same time, to go to www.gunbroker.com over and over and over again. Thousands of computers trying to connect to the same website, and each computer trying to connect dozens of times per second, can bring a website to its knees.

Analogy... you get together with hundreds of your friends and all go shopping in the same store at the same time. Anyone legitimately trying to shop at the store would be "denied" because of the huge volume of traffic.

You'll hear about malware out there. There are MANY home computers in this country that have been infiltrated by malware and can be controlled, at will, by the folks that wrote the nasty software. These computers are often referred to as robots, just waiting for a command from the mother ship to start attacking a website.

Yes, it is nasty, and can put a business offline.
