GEtting the foresight off the 10/22

Is there a trick to getting the old foresight off the 10/22? I've been tapping to the point where I've marred the site itself and it won't budge. Looking at it, it looks like the dovetail was far from a perfect fit - I'm wondering if that's the issue. I'm afraid to hit the damned thing any harder for fear of damaging the barrel.
