This is Walter. Perhaps the oldest male smallie in the Quabbin (est. 10-12 years old). Twenty-one inches, but skinny, only about five pounds. Quickly released to spawn again. I wonder though if I've caught him before--I hope to catch him again.

Obie did the taste test to determine gender.

Rob, first, I examined the lower jaw, which is usually more triangular in males than females and then checked the scales around the U-G opening which are different shaped in males and females, then, of course, I went with the taste test--tasted like fish, hence my conclusion. BTW whatever happened to "nice fish"?

No pic (released), but I caught my first 40incher Monday. It was over 42", caught from the surf with an SP Minnow, which I modified to run shallow. This is in southern Maine. Got skunked Saturday & Sunday.

Nice! I'm told quite a few real nice fish finally arrived in Maine last week, I hope this means there will be a decent fall run down here.

I hope so. I've only caught two keepers this year and those were both in July a few days apart.

Went out togging on a friends boat. Nothing big but we managed 13 keepers and a ton of small fish. Representing with the NES hat on!

Yes , a few sea bass mixed in with them mostly small ones though.

Went offshore looking for tuna, didn't find one of those but this small mako hit the diving swimmer on the troll. They are meaner looking in person than on tv.

Nice! I've always wanted to catch a Mako! I've only caught a 12 ft blue shark a few summers ago. There's been quite a few sharks around up my way (off Gloucester) not sure where you were. My dad had an all day fishing charter on Saturday and hooked up to a 10 ft blue shark off Thatchers Island off Rockport/Gloucester.

We were SE of Nomans, 40 miles offshore. We had this one up I put a tailwrap on it pulled the tail up to tie it off and it didn't like that one bit, did a quick roll chopped the line with it's teeth went straight down and slipped out of the wrap. Swam away with a gaff hole in it and the plug still in it's mouth. I'm sure it will make a nice snack for another mako..we didn't see a tuna out there at all.
