I just sold a friend of mine a pistol and on then FA10 there is no spot for Hispanic on the form for race what do you put?

I've usually seen hispanics entered as white. A call to the CHSB would clarify it to their liking.

I'm always tempted to mark myself down as African American, even though I am pale and have typically "white" features. I firmly believe that we are all descended from Australopithecus africanus, and thus are all of African descent.

Gawd I hate racial categorization. NOTHING good comes from it.

Very many years ago on a 4473, since I found the question "race" offensive, I wrote in "Human". The BATFE told the FFL that they didn't find it very humorous and I was made to "revise" it to "White". I did answer the question honestly, however! [devil]

That's because Hispanic isn't a race; it's an ethnic classification. If you look at any of the last several the US censuses they ask separate questions for race (White, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American/Alaskan Native) and Hispanic origin. Some of the random sample questionnaires also go into more detail on national origin for both Hispanics and others. A lot of people get confused because the EEOC and Department of Education use a composite classification of Race/Ethnic Origin that makes Hispanic a separate category and specifies that the others are only for those not of Hispanic origin. Basically this whole racial classification can of worms is so screwed up that one of my colleagues (Cape Verdean) once said, only the Spanish slave traders and the Nazis ever did a decent job of it. [wink]

Ken:

When I was at grad school in Silly Valley, one of my professors was South African. The only time I saw him completely, truly, down-to-the-soles-of-his-feet pissed was when the liberals were bringing up race issues. His response was that if they really wanted to be able to differentiate between people of different races, then he knew people in South Africa who could do it -- and they either were Nazis or learned it from the Nazis.

He had seen racial classification up close and personal like no one born in the US has ever seen, and nothing pissed him off more. He is a truly honorable man. And the f*cking liberals just don't understand that they are doing exactly the same thing.

So what do I put on the form?

I'm sick of this multi-language official form crap. If they can't speak English, and read the laws, they don't deserve to own a gun as far as I'm concerned.

It was just two years ago that some Hmong (Cambodian) hunter shot the property owner of the land he was hunting on. He couldn't read the keep out signs, and didn't communicate well in English. I think that's a real danger for someone with a gun in their hand. Can they read a "No Hunting" or "No Shooting" sign? What if the sign reads "School behind these trees".

OK so no sign says that, but you get my point. I'm fed up with bending over backwards for 20 or more different languages, and the cost to produce forms and translators for them for official business.

My family made sure we kids spoke English, not Italian, and I'm glad they did. Try to go to Italy and get a hunting license in English.

Were way off where this started my friend speaks English and I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT TO PUT FOR RACE 4 CHOICES WHITE, ASIAN , BLACK OR INDIAN.

So what do I put on the form?

White, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American/Alaskan Native: whichever one fits you more closely. If you're visiting friends in Oaxaca, and sometimes get referred to as "El Negro", "El Chino" or "El Indio", that might be a hint. Otherwise you're probably "El Blanco". It's your call. (BTW, according to federal law, only you can decide; it's illegal for anybody to put in what they think you are.)

I have a friend who came here from South Africa. He's whiter than I am, but still enjoys checking the "African American" box :)

He even tried to join the college "African Students Group" but they wouldn't let him, even though he was the only one there actually FROM africa. Awesome.

Kim DuToit does that, too.

See, if it was the BLACK Students Group, or the NEGRO Students Group, he wouldn't have had that confusion and tried to join where he wasn't wanted. [smile]

OTOH, try and form a WHITE Students Group or a National Association for the Advancement of White People and see how fast you get shut down. [angry]

That's because it's all our fault Ross.

The Great White Scourge that is...

Wow,

I'm white, and of German descent, clearly it's all MY fault now that I think of it. [rolleyes]

Thank you very much that is the answer I was looking for when I asked this question.

Most of the explanation on this board are almost always spot on, but in this case I have personal experience in the matter, having gone through in in MA, NH, ME, CT, FL.

Being Hispanic is not a race. And it is not an ethnicity either. It means absloutely nothing.

My ethnicity and culture has nothing in common with that of Mexicans, Argentinians, Chileans, Ecuadorians, or Venezuelans other than language. With Brazilians I share nothing even though they are Hispanics as well since Portugal is part of the Iberian Peninsula, which was known as Hispania by the Romans.

Cubans and Dominicans are probably the closest to me. Followed by the Spanish themselves.

BTW, the Spanish are FAR from a homogenous society. Spanish people are a mix of Celts, Iberians, Romans, Cartaginians, Visigoths, Gauls, Greeks, Vasques, and Moors. Even today, the Spanish usually do not refer to themselves as such but as Gallegos, Vascos, Catalanes, Castellanos, Aragoneses, Andaluces, Valencianos, and Extremadurenos. And most of those regions have their own distinct language. What most people refer to as Spanish is actually only Castellano (Castillian). Euskadi (the Basque language) is not even a Romance language and in fact it shares nothing in common with any other known European language.

Yet, many of the Irish people have the same Y chromosome as Basque people do. Is that why they both had long lasting Republican regimes? ;) Since my Y chromosome could be identical to Y chromosome of a basque fellow putting down Hispanic, then may I put down hispanic?

I never ever considered such dubious racial distinctions previously. I was kind of shell-shocked when I had to to first fill out the 4473. Perhaps it is time as society that we move past some inklings, which were only promoted once before extensively by government run by facists that called themselves, Socialists.

Lol, I fall into that group. I was born in Mozambique when it was a Portuguese colony. I moved to South Africa during the time the insurgency took over the country and kicked the Portuguese out, circa 1974.

My friends call me African American all the time even though I'm white. They get a kick out of it.

Reminds me of a joke from the 70's by, I think Richard Pryor. He told a story of having to fill out a form that asked the following question:

Color:

His answer?

Off-white.

His comment: "Let them guess how far off."
