Eating fresh fish

This summer I ate a fresh trout uncooked. It was delicious.

I squeezed the roe into my hand first. Yum. (best tasting to me)
Slit the belly, gutted, removed and ate the skin. The skin tasted like fish flavored gum. It was not that bad.

The trout was small so chewing up the spine was easy. I tried not to eat the ribs.

If you like sashimi, you will enjoy uncooked, fresh fish.

If you cannot have a fire, uncooked fish is not a bad way to sustain yourself.
 
Just make sure if you are going to do this recreationally that the fish you use is not prone to parasites (no bottom feeders).

While I love sashimi, unless the situation were truly dire I'd find a way to cook my fish no matter how fresh - unless it was a nice blue fin, but we don't get many of those in the lakes and streams around here. And really, the chances of being able to light a fire are much higher than the odds of having some nice pickled ginger, soy, and wasabi to go with your fish if the SHTF [wink].

I ate a piece of meat fresh out of the head cavity on the spot.It's like "Natures-Viagra" I get a hard on,just thinkin' about it.[shocked]

I have a coworker who's brother runs boats out of Glouster. About a month ago he came in with a chunk the size of a nice roast... dang, that was good!! (some did hit the grill, but a good part of it was eaten as God intended - my wife looked on in disgust. She'll be starving with jenlynn724.

I saw on a food channel a place where they serve you live lobster. It's still looking at you waving its antennea around while you eat it. I can't wait to find a place to try that.

There's a place in Boston that does that... I forget where... a Chinese place I think. That's too hard core for me. [hmmm]
 
Raw lobster is very chewy. Raw steamers are not as good as cherry stones.
Raw scallops are my favorite if they are really fresh.

Ceviche anyone?

Dang fresh tuna....I am jealous and getting hungry.

No self respecting New Englander would eat like that... it is just wrong. Next thing you'll be eating sprouts, bean curd and tofu.

Move to CA... you'll feel right at home.

+1 That's why the Japanese don't serve any freshwater fish raw.
 
For those in NH. Shira Kiku off exit 6 (broad street/130) in Nashua is stellar, ridiculously fresh with the nicest staff ever. They also have amazing Korean and some other dishes that they learned the recipes from friends.

It really depends. I am not eating raw catfish, carp etc. Humans have been consuming non treated water for a long time. The top couple of inches of water is usually safe for consumption due to UV light from the sun.

Swamp water and water in tropical areas is more dangerous.

The trout I ate was in a stream in the Sierra Nevada. I think the elevation was over 10k. I drank the water from Georgia to Maine on the A.T. without a filter without problems. It seems fear of water is an American thing. The Euros I have met on the trail rarely treat their water. Most people are immune to giardia, but they can carry and can pass it on, especially if hands are not sanitized after wiping if you know what I mean.
 
i eat sushi but no way will I eat raw freshwater or inshore fish. watching a show on parasites on animal planet channel has made an impression I will never forget.
