Last week the survival podcast had a guy on that does dog training. The emphasis seemed to be more on the practical than the tacticool. The dog being trained to not just hold on to an arm while getting bludgeoned over the head or shot. Also he used the dog for tracking his children if they wander out of site in the yard, etc...

Can ayone recommend any good videos on the subject or local instructors? Youtube is... well...

I think I've done well getting my dog obedient and compliant on a few non-routine commands, but I need further education in order to get him where I want him.

Jim Ward is Awesome!!!! we grew up together and is also a fellow Maetial Artist. You won't go wrong with Jim Ward.

I think shutzhund would definitely cover most of it, when we first were looking for a dog I had looked into it. It would fit the bill except in almost every area except what I understand the bite work style to be.

Thanks for the leads so far. At the very least both places deserve a phone call.

At least another phone call you could make.

I have been around his dogs. (dogs he trained) for over 15 years and seen/photographed some of the training.

I know he is a little south for you but a phone call or email can be done from home.

Good Luck!

Sounds like what you're looking for is Schutzhund training.

You can buy books and videos, but you're best off looking for a quality schuthund dog trainer

Check out Olympia Kennels - http://www.olympiakennels.com/

I second this for the NH area. Mike Pinksten is Mr Fix it. If you have a problem to correct, or just need to learn yourself he is the guy in this area. I have used him before for my work dog, fixed the problem in one session that many trainers locally failed to correct. Just keep in mind...its most always the other end of the leash that is causing the problem!

Try this club in Wrentham for Schutzund, http://www.ics-club.com/ but, for finding lost kids, or lost anyone for that matter, air scenting is the way to go as opposed to tracking. Air scenting isn't hard at all and really just takes time and practice. Check out ARDA or SARDA for a local search and rescue club.
