Big mistake in Florida

So, what was this stellar public servant doing for the whole time when she couldn't perform her job, due to a
problem that went on for a year?

I'll bet she had no problem logging into her FaceBook, Twitter and Instagram account

Guess the feds didn't put a big enough "Forgot password" link on the page.

It's a trap! The system in place can't be trusted, so they'll just stop the approvals- period. I know, [tinfoil], but I would not be surprised if this somehow doesn't evolve into yet another problem for 2A.

edit-

On second thought, the no log-on approvals seems to be a purposeful act:

"After the error was discovered, the Florida Department of Agriculture reviewed 365 applications that should have been, but weren't, run through the national database, commissioner Adam Putnam told BuzzFeed News in a statement.

That review resulted in 291 applications that were revoked, he said."

291 out of 365 checked were revoked? Gee, what are the odds?

Just saw this on slashdot :
Unresolved Login Issue Prevented Florida 'Concealed Weapon' Background Checks For Over a Year - Slashdot

For more than a year, the state of Florida failed to conduct national background checks on tens of thousands of applications for concealed weapons permits, potentially allowing drug addicts or people with a mental illness to carry firearms in public...The employee in charge of the background checks could not log into the system, the investigator learned. The problem went unresolved until discovered by another worker in March 2017 -- meaning that for more than a year applications got approved without the required background check.

During that time, which coincided with the June 12, 2016 shooting at Pulse nightclub that left 50 dead, the state saw an unprecedented spike in applications for concealed weapons permits. There were 134,000 requests for permits in the fiscal year ending in June 2015. The next 12 months broke a record, 245,000 applications, which was topped again in 2017 when the department received 275,000 applications... There are now 1.8 million concealed weapon permit holders in Florida.
The employee with the login issue, who has since been fired, "told the Times she had been working in the mailroom when she was given oversight of the database in 2013. 'I didn't understand why I was put in charge of it.'"

And this is why we can't have anything nice...

Probably on purpose. You don't think it really takes 3 months for the background check for a LTC do you? But the guy who does it is probably the janitor 25 days out of 30 in a month and so it takes a while to get them all done.

Lol. I forgot how Government works... [rofl2]

Meanwhile, a little less then half of our national representation are salivating over further detailing and registering the way you choose to exercise your Rights... just wait until you see that horrible mess...

so - what's going to happen to the people that were issued their permits? I just went and checked mine. It was a renewal, issued 02/18. Looks like it's outside of that window of incompetence.

Why does the Dept of Farmers have anything to do with firearms licensing?

Probably to avoid enlarging government, believe it or not. A bunch of functions will frequently get consilidated within one agency in state governments that try to run a cleaner ship.

and now the original story is being refuted...

During the time the employee failed to do her job, approximately 350,000 applicants for carry licenses were processed. Of those 350,000, 365 had a disqualifier based on the NICS background check.

The employee should have uploaded those 365 into the internal computer system to stop the processing of those applications. She did not. So those 365 applicants got their licenses anyhow.

Let’s go back to math. 365 applicants out of 350,000 were not properly vetted by an irresponsible worker. That comes about at 0.14% of failure or 99.86% of the applications vetted the right way by the rest of the employees of the Division of Licensing during that period of time.

When the Division discovered the problem, the employee was let go. The Division then ran new background checks on all 365 applicants who initially had NICS name-based disqualifiers. Of those 365, 74 were cleared and 291 still had disqualifiers, so their licenses to carry firearms were immediately suspende

Tampa Bay Times & Fake News: Background Check were performed after all.
