Bay State law takes aim at hunter safety
Friday, July 7, 2006 - Updated: 12:09 AM EST

All new hunters in Massachusetts will be required to complete a hunter education course before taking to the field, under a bill signed into law yesterday by Gov. Mitt Romney.
Since 1998, anyone with a gun license was automatically qualified to receive a hunting license, regardless of the type of license they had.
But anyone who gets a hunting license after January 2007 will be required to take a course in basic skills and responsibility.

I think a similar provision of this law had been in effect since the mid 70s. I remember taking a "Hunter Safety Course" at the Weston PD headquarters to allow me to get a hunting license at that time. The course was one time, and was only required for people who did not previousy have a hunting license.
