Hi Folks,

I'm looking to be mildly educated about the effect of ports on a handgun barrel. I'm considering a G23 and a 9mm storm lake conversion kit. Looks like they come as Std. 'non' or multiple ported options available.

#1 - Of what benefit are ports?

#2 - Of what benefit are more ports?

#3 - being a newb, i have to ask, is a ported barrel legal in MA?

thanks!

Ported is legal in MA.

The reason for the porting is to deflect and diffuse the gasses as shots are fired, reducing muzzle rise so that a follow-up shot can be made quicker. They also tend to deflect flames up and to the side, depending on the porting, which can be a problem when shooting in the dark. More ports = more diffusion/deflection, less muzzle rise.

If you search around here, there have been a few discussions on the pros and cons of ported barrels in the past.

It really depends on how the port are made for them to be effective. Just drilling holes in the barrel don't make a effective port. Then you need to tune the load to the ports. They do work, but not as well as a comp

I would look at schuemman barrels
