Ambulance breaks down in Detroit on NYE amidst gun fire

[laugh2]

I feel really bad laughing at that, considering the situation. I hadn't heard of this problem before either. It's a stupid problem to have. Couple that with the footage that sounds like it was taken in Monrovia, and I'm actually shocked. I knew Detroit had problems, but this is just ridiculous. I had no idea it was that bad.

How many more years of economic recession and widespread unemployment before that's what all major cities are like?

Escape from Detroit!!!

I had the pleasure of listening to NYPD police scanner all night on New Years.

It was raining bullets there too. I kid you not, at least 40 calls of gunfire in the air. Just before 12am - dispatcher was saying "unconfirmed shots fired" at least 40+ times. It sounded like a war zone to actually hear so much gunfire on the radio.

I like how cool the medic was. The guys around here panic on the radio when there is to much traffic.

So the Paramedics carry equipment and medication that can save someone else's life. But can not carry a firearm at work to protect thier own life, in that hell hole.

I can't think of any EMS agencies that allow carry. In NC we weren't allowed, but most of us carried ASPs and I'm sure I rarely ran on a truck from Station 1 (Downtown Raleigh) without someone carrying a firearm.

I was about to open the window and scream "Amber Lamps!" but I have a cold and would have probably sound like a man-boy going through puberty.

The homeless looking news reporter is behind Mr Medic. You can see his boots and glove. He stepped back as my phone was taking the pic.

This was around 4:15PM today in downtown Detroit

If you're in the D you need to go to Slows BBQ. wicked good stuff. I'll admit, I liked my few years living in MI and hanging out in Detroit. Some real good scenes there.

Ha, no shit! It's a small world. How is Detroit?
Apparently the Detroit auto show is going on. Not sure if I'll have time outside of work to go see anything.

Where's Slows BBQ?
I'm staying in Dearborn but working in downtown Detroit.

I took a wrong turn and drove by a pretty abandoned area of about 10-15 blocks. Saw a few burned down houses and significant abandoned houses with garages without garage doors.

Slows is at 2138 MICHIGAN AVENUE, DETROIT 313 962 9828 It's in downtown kind of near the old Tiger's Stadium I think. It's not a bad part of town, but its not super fantastic.

The burned down houses and stuff is par for the course. Hell, they have that surrounding the colleges and even the hospital. It'll be beautiful old victorian mansions on one block, and the next block will be a bombed out piece of crap. Dearborn can be OK. If you try to get local food there go for Polish or Middle Eastern. Supposedly the biggest enclave of middle-easterners outside of the middle east.

Happy New Year Medic 9

So I wonder if it was partially 'TV Magic' that there were so many gunshots going off while doing their interviews.. I feel like if I were in that truck, I'd be slouched, making myself as small as possible..

Not quite Monrovia, yet.... Needs moar technicals first.

The weird thing with Detroit, compared to most american big dump cities, is the sheer amount of vacant property. It also doesn't help that the city has not reduced its property tax rates, apparently. You can buy a mansion in Detroit for short money... but you will still pay full property tax on it, which is ****ing stupid considering that the city is basically a war zone. If they want an incentive for people to stay there, they're certainly not creating one.

That place is a terrifying example of how deep you can go into a liberal socialist hellhole and still continue limping forward. I don't understand why anyone is still there?

Walk away.
