"Planning" of course. Some times you gotta approach these things with proper de-liber-A-tion! Round reciever or hex reciever? Carbine with integral bayo or repro sniper? This isn't a snap decision.

Just gotta come up with a good name for her. I don't know... a tough old girl from Springfield... Marge, maybe? [smile]
Betsy.

I was listening to a Beach Boys album and the name just jumped out at me.

(If you're wondering what the inspiration was, listen to song 2, Ballad of Ole Betsy

There's something about "Character".

One very nice rifle there Dwarven1, I've got to get myself an M1. I had a chance to shoot an M1 at Sparks Pit during the recent shoot in Vermont (Thanks again Nickle !). There's something very cool about;

BOOM !
BOOM !
BOOM !
BOOM !
BOOM !
BOOM !
BOOM !
BOOM !

and then, TING ! ... as the clip goes flying straight up. [smile]

Strangely enough, Betsy was there... on Sunday, anyway. [smile]

I fell in love with an M1 Garand yesterday.
She is in a very nice condition, except the bayo
lug was cut off (old, mandatory BS which is luckily
no longer in the law).
Would I have to replace the entire gas tube to get
her back into original shape ?
SA 598xxx tells she was born in May, 1942.
Haven't bought her yet, but this may well happen soon[smile]

I believe so; the gas cylinder (on my rifle, at least) appears to be forged* & machined. On the plus side; the gas cylinder is readily available. I would expect most of the USGI parts to be SA (most common).

Prices in USD run:

$48 for a take-off piece (Numrich; pc 46)
$65 gauged take-off (m1garandrifle; pc 29)
$89 New, in wrapper USGI (m1garandrifle; pc 29a)
(Fulton Armory also has them for $149.95 new, or $49.95 for gauged take-off)

Does this mean you'll be coming over this December for the "Bulge" shoot? I still like your idea from last year; bring over the 98KARs!

*Doesn't have the minute porosity under 5x magnification typical of a casting.

JuergenG:

Are there problems importing gun parts into Germany?

I had no difficulties ordering gun parts from Spain recently, and I just assumed the reverse would also be true for all of western Europe.

*Edited for spelling and grammar

Ray,
thanks for the quick answers and links.
Ordering parts from abroad is no problem, as long as they
are no "controlled" parts, requiring a permit/license.
Controlled parts would be i.e. barrels, receivers, revolver
cylinders.

IF I made it over for the shoot I'd have to represent the
"other side", taking the K98k and P.08, unfortunately no MG42[sad]
Although, I have a M1917, a M1911A1 and a .30M1 Carbine, too.
