Added a bazooka to the arsenal

A new 500mm f/4 Canon lens showed up here today. Plenty of learning to do, but this thing is sweet. The kit came with neoprene covers in realtree.

We headed out the back door to find some wildlife before we lost the light and ended up settling for a couple of ducks and an owl.

I would guess maybe 40 yards. I had a 1.4 magnifier on the lens but still needed to crop a bit.

Congrats! I used to own a Nikon 500/4. Lenses like that are a lot of work and hard to use but nothing else will do sometimes.

Ahh... that explains the 700mm noted in the exif information for that pic. How much speed do you lose with the 1.4 teleconverter? 1 stop?

Yes, the 1.4x results in a loss of one full stop.

Out of curiosity (if you don't mind)...Are you a pro or amateur, and what types of subjects do you intend to use it for? Early results seem to indicate nature shots, but are there other planned objectives?

Definitely amateur. This lens is intended primarily for birds.
