(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A suspect armed with the machete tried to rob a Route 148 Package and Variety Store in Oakham on Wednesday, but the cashier was able to scare the suspect off with a gun.

The robbery happened around 7 p.m. The suspect arrived at the New Mart armed with the machete, demanding cash from the clerk.

The storeowner and former part-time police officer pulled out his 9mm Smith and Wesson and scared the man off.
Police believe the man later robbed a convenience store in Clinton later that night also using a machete.

State and local police have video of the second robbery which is resulting in tips. Brad Taylor points out he has never been robbed in 17 years of doing business. He feels he actually saved the man's life by not firing a shot while thwarting the robbery.

Police are working on the case and hope to apprehend the man, who is described as 6 feet tall and white, with a round face and short, light hair. He was wearing gloves, black pants, a black sweatshirt with hood and black handkerchief covering his face.
