Saw this on GunBroker a few weeks ago and realized I hadn't used my FFL03 since the fall...I had to have her. I had actually been looking for a Winchester M1 Garand for my collection, but came across this beauty, and another 1918 manufacture with a USMC '43 rebarrel from segley? it was in similar condition as the one i had purchased, but had been reading that a lot of the USMC barrels were actually bent and straightened out after the great war as surplus. this was not something i was willing to risk, as i'm known to shoot my antique rifles more often than I shoot my black killy rifles.

anyway, without further ado...here's the 1918 Springfield '03 with what I believe is the original stock and barrel. I have yet to tear it down, so here are the first pictures of the unboxing and external parts.

this was the box it was shipped in...pretty damn clever if you ask me!

wish this damn thing could talk so i could know where it has been. was this an officers rifle (hence the awesome condition and the lack of having been shot)...did it fall behind a rack at some point and miss a war or something?

some of the mysteries will obviously never solved, but i'm hoping when i take it down i can find out more about it.

thanks to SmokeEaterPilot for telling me about the phillipine ordinance cartouce, and for making me so jealous with his most recent 2 1903 purchases that it forced me to start a collection of my own.

so what do you think? paid a CH over $750, and i'll never sell it...did i dun did gud?

thanks for looking,

I love these old 1903's I grabbed one very similar to yours for about $390 last year. It's one of my most prized possessions (and I have a sizable collection of milsurp weapons.

Congratulations on a great score!!!

Mike,

You did very very well. A high number for that price is a nice deal. Original barrel is also desirable.

The Philippines Ordnance Department is definitely an uncommon rebuild cartouche. Most times you always see August, San Antonio, etc. But that one and the Panama Rebuild to me are more desirable.

Any markings on the bolt?

Congrats!!!!!!!! Let me know how it shoots

you stole it! Very nice indeed, I'm jealous. Never seen the Benecia Arsenal rebuild stamp before, nevermind the Phillipines one.

my next post on this thread will be of the take down and internals/initial inspection and lube, and then sometime this weekend i'll be taking her to the range to see how she shoots. i figure i'll try shooting her in the 4 Marine Corps shooting positions, and then off the bench. anyone know of any good videos as to how to use the leather sling for support on the 1903?

$390 for any 03 Springfield is quite a feat, let alone an unusual one. Range report.

I haven't shot it. It's an early model where the receiver has been said was not heat treated properly. The seller on GB thought he was dumping a bad gun. The weapon is in great shape with no cracks or damage of any kind.

Here's a few pictures

geez...that's in great shape! for the preservation of my own sanity, i've stopped buying rifles I can't shoot. I have about $400 invested in an 1889 Schmidt Rubin and it's never seen the range...been kicking myself for buying that one ever since. it'll be a nice wall hanger for my basement bar someday though...and because it's not considered a firearm, it'd be perfectly legal.
