Saw this on GunBroker a few weeks ago and realized I hadn't used my FFL03 since the fall...I had to have her. I had actually been looking for a Winchester M1 Garand for my collection, but came across this beauty, and another 1918 manufacture with a USMC '43 rebarrel from segley? it was in similar condition as the one i had purchased, but had been reading that a lot of the USMC barrels were actually bent and straightened out after the great war as surplus. this was not something i was willing to risk, as i'm known to shoot my antique rifles more often than I shoot my black killy rifles.
anyway, without further ado...here's the 1918 Springfield '03 with what I believe is the original stock and barrel. I have yet to tear it down, so here are the first pictures of the unboxing and external parts.
this was the box it was shipped in...pretty damn clever if you ask me!
i'm partial to the finger groove scant stock
bolt porn
and she's a shooter
rear sight blade is a little beat up...but, it's got character, right?
original barrel?
gigantic safety/mag cutoff
POD-D and BAWL stock cartouches...showing service (or at least shipment) to the Phillipines given that this is the original stock
is two P's better than one?
seems legit
best for last...i was gizzing in my pants when the muzzle guage didn't even reach the +1 mark.
wish this damn thing could talk so i could know where it has been. was this an officers rifle (hence the awesome condition and the lack of having been shot)...did it fall behind a rack at some point and miss a war or something?
some of the mysteries will obviously never solved, but i'm hoping when i take it down i can find out more about it.
thanks to SmokeEaterPilot for telling me about the phillipine ordinance cartouce, and for making me so jealous with his most recent 2 1903 purchases that it forced me to start a collection of my own.
so what do you think? paid a CH over $750, and i'll never sell it...did i dun did gud?
thanks for looking,
Mike W.
