... since the only way to find out if it's a .223 chamber on a barrel marked 5.56 is to run a reamer through it and see if any material comes out.

There are numerous ways to check a chamber to find out if it is a NATO chamber without running a reamer into it.

Try before you buy might be the way to go. Then decide based on what you were comfortable with. Everybody is different.

There is nothing to "try" unless we are talking about different stocks/rail configurations. An A2 AR will have the same controls/ergonomics as any other AR. The issues outlined above have all to do with how the rifle is built and the quality of its internal parts.
 
Ayup. Save money by not buying stuff you don't find to your liking. All honda civics are still the same, just different goodies.
