Where to find storage wheat?

Wheatberry Farms no longer carries bulk wheat. Called them this morning. [frown]

Alternatives, although not local are...

Recommend this place: http://www.honeyvillegrain.com (shipping is $4.49 regardless of weight) They sell bulk grains at decent prices. It has all gone up quite a bit lately.

Also, https://www.breadbeckers.com/, although I have never ordered from them and http://beprepared.com/ has it already in pails for long term storage.

Don't forget the grain mill! Nothing beats bread made from freshly ground wheat flour. [smile]

I haven't had much luck finding local sources for this stuff. I bought a new Country Living Grain Mill off eBay. The seller was actually an online dealer as well and it was on eBay for a few bucks cheaper than his online store. The CL mill got the best ratings in nearly all reviews I saw. Works very well. I just picked up some spare parts for it, just in case, from Frugal's last week but it is build like a tank.

Check your local natural food store for bulk grains. I had mine order me a couple of 50# sacks of wheat and corn. They also might be a good source for a grain mill.

Local Co-op Source

Got this from someone who does co-op orders in Belchertown. Prices look good but they don't order until next year. Might be something to be part of though...

We do not sell grain like Liz. We operate a coop and consolidate
customer orders into bulk order to Wheat Montana. Our next order will
be early next year. If you want quantities < 50#, we can sell items
from our personal stock to hold you over. We can get most other natural
foods and supplements as well. We are located in Belchertown Mass. You
can phone us at 413-323-4338. Email: [email protected]

Following is the wholesale price list from WM.
Freight charges are not included. Current shipping cost is as
follows:

$ 6 per 50# bag
$ 9 per 45# pail

Pails have become uneconomical, as you can see. Consider buying
products in bags and ordering empty pails if needed. WM says they can
just pack the empties on top since they weigh very little.

Just a bump to this post to see if anyone knows of a store in the northern Mass - southern NH area selling wheat, grain mills, etc..

I just recently placed an order with Walton Foods in Idaho....total was almost $400 before shipping. I was gettting some wheat, a small grain mill, and some other items - not really a lot. Unfortunatley , the shipping was going to be about $140 !!!! Yikes...so I cancelled the order. Would be nice to find a store or even on-line dealer who is closer to New England , to keep the ship costs reasonable...

I was considering ordering some superpails of wheat/rice/beans from Emergency Essentials as they have flat rate shipping, but it looks like they just build the shipping cost into their pricing:

http://beprepared.com/quickshoplist.asp_Q_c_E_79_A_name_E_Superpails

The Co-Op listed above sounds good, I think I will contact them, the only downside is their pails sounds like they are just pail + oxygen absorber, no mylar - which means I would have to get the bags and pack properly in buckets myself - a hassle I hoped to avoid. Another downside to the Co-Op is they are a 4hr round trip from me.

Just got the updated price list from the co-op folks in Belchertown. As expected, prices and shipping have gone up but it is still MUCH cheaper than ordering from an online store. It won't be any less expensive in the foreseeable future!

Example:

Honeyville Grain - 50# Hard Red Winter Wheat - $41.99 (+ $4.49 shipping for total order)

Co-op - 50# Hard Red Winter Wheat - $15.60 (+ $9 shipping per bag) = $24.60

Also, purchasing locally means that the co-op will continue to offer this service. They are looking to get an order together for early March and need to know who wants to get in on the deal.

Someone on another board called the LDS cannery in Worcester about buying from them and using their facilities and was told they are only selling to church members now due to government regulations (presumably related to the church's tax free status).

Thanks for telling us about the co-op rob, just got my order in.

I just placed an order with the Belchertown co-op. They'll send the whole order to Montana when it totals 5,000 pounds. Mary said they're getting close... it's a good time to call if anyone else is considering this. Mary Salva 413-323-4338.

pricing

I dont know what grains are to be used but when the refineries get going to make fuel the price of grains will go up or be unavailabl.you also might find the mother earth or survival mags list these products
[smile]

Just picked up 400lb wheat from the Belchertown co-op. [rockon][cheers]

I was told that they had 35 families involved in the co-op buy. They are planning another one in six months or so. It is a great local resource to have available. Mary had over 10,000 lbs. delivered!

saw this today on SuvivalBlog.com:

Several readers flagged this: US grain reserves reach the bottom of the barrel. Here is a key quote: "The only thing left in the entire CCC inventory will be 2.7 million bushels of wheat which is about enough wheat to make 1⁄2 of a loaf of bread for each of the 300 million people in America.” Back in mid-April, I told a New York Sun reporter about the massive outflow of US grain, and mentioned that I was surprised that the Bush Administration has not implemented export controls. With these recent figures, I am even more concerned. I believe in free markets, but I'm a realist. At some point in the near future, the Bush Administration is likely to step in and stop the hemorrhaging wheat from the US. If you haven't done so already, stock up on hard red winter wheat as soon as possible. By this time next year, wheat prices will likely double again.
