I strongly recommend the you all read "Deep Survival" by Lwarence Gonzales. 2005. This book explores why some people fail in life threatening events and others succeed. This is not about shooting to defend yourself but rather survival.

I like this book and have read it in sections a few different times. It has a nice run of different situations from war stories to wilderness survival and is much more about the mindest than the methods. Its not a "how to survive in the woods" type of book, but instead a "how to survive in any situation by having the right mindest"
