I needed to remove the rear handguard from the M1 Garand, and was looking at the instructions on the CMP web site, which recommended using a screwdriver ground to a point, with another screwdriver between the clip and the barrel, it looked really awkward and likely to scratch the barrel.
But then I came across a tip on a forum thread which worked really well.
You take a piece of stainless steel wire , pass it under the left side of the handguard clip and loop it back up, wrap it a couple of times around a pliers, and pull up, it pulls the hook of the clip up and out, and then you can walk it off with a screwdriver. Worked like a charm...
I happen to have a roll of stainless steel 'safety wire', the stuff they use to keep aircraft bolts from loosening, it's really handy for all sorts of things.
