Like I wrote earlier, when I take a bunch of pistols with me to the range they travel in my hard sided pistol case:

The range bag carries everything else so it is less important that I be able to fit half a dozen pistols in it.

There's 2 issues here. (1) going to the range, setting up and shooting some targets with all your other stuff in the truck.
(2) going to a match, dragging your gear between 6 stages/pits in the summer sun and having everything you might need since your truck is a 1/2 mile away.
