NSSF Legislative Alert: Support HR 2834: The Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage Opportunities Act

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) – the trade association for the firearms industry – is urging all sportsmen and women to support H.R. 2834, the Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage Opportunities Act. The bill is currently in the Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands. A hearing on the bill is scheduled for tomorrow (Friday, September 9, 2011). The bill establishes that fishing, hunting, and recreational shooting are important traditional activities that have a key place on our national forests and public lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.

Passage of this bill is necessary as existing law does not expressly recognize or provide for the continuation of these activities which make material contributions to fish and wildlife conservation. We are deeply concerned that failure to specifically provide for continued fishing, hunting, and recreational shooting on these lands, and direction to the land management agencies to facilitate these activities, will lead to reduced opportunities and diminished support for conservation.

H.R. 2834 also restores the status quo regarding wildlife management in Wilderness areas and ensures that fishing and hunting cannot be barred on Wilderness lands by misapplication of “necessity” tests.

Please take a few minutes to contact your representative in Washington, D.C. and urge him or her to support of this pro-hunting, pro-conservation and pro-industry bill.
The Capitol Hill Switchboard is 202-224-3121.
