I haven't been able to read thru all the threads to try and figure this out - but here's the scenario. I've got a friend down in CT - and we're thinking of doing a swap - my end of the swap is an FAL.

Are FAL's legal in CT now? I am pretty much completely unfamiliar with CT law , so I don't know if they're just outright illegal - or if it's more of a MA situation where they're legal as long as they're configured in a certain way.

Any threads here that cover that?

Unless I'm mistaken, it qualifies as one of the AWs and needed to be registered as of Jan 1 along with all your 10+ mags. I know the FAL uses 20 rounders for the most part, both inch and metric. I don't see why you could not trade it for something else as long as it was properly registered in the beginning. What the new owner is to do is anyone guess. I don't have a clue.

PS It would have to go through a CT FFL, of course.

I'm in MA - I own the rifle - he's in CT - we're thinking of doing a trade, so it's not currently registered in CT.

If it's not pre-94 it's illegal and cannot be brought into CT.

I don't think it's pre-94. I could check , but - I think you may have answered the question - this is a no-go.

To be illegal, it has to fail one of 2 tests.

1) The named illegal AWs.
(1) [Any] "Assault weapon" means:

(A) (i) Any selective-fire firearm capable of fully automatic, semiautomatic or burst fire at the option of the user or any of the following specified semiautomatic firearms: Algimec Agmi; Armalite AR-180; Australian Automatic Arms SAP Pistol; Auto-Ordnance Thompson type; Avtomat Kalashnikov AK-47 type; Barrett Light-Fifty model 82A1; Beretta AR-70; Bushmaster Auto Rifle and Auto Pistol; Calico models M-900, M-950 and 100-P; Chartered Industries of Singapore SR-88; Colt AR-15 and Sporter; Daewoo K-1, K-2, Max-1 and Max-2; Encom MK-IV, MP-9 and MP-45; Fabrique Nationale FN/FAL, FN/LAR, or FN/FNC; FAMAS MAS 223; Feather AT-9 and Mini-AT; Federal XC-900 and XC-450; Franchi SPAS-12 and LAW-12; Galil AR and ARM; Goncz High-Tech Carbine and High-Tech Long Pistol; Heckler & Koch HK-91, HK-93, HK-94 and SP-89; Holmes MP-83; MAC-10, MAC-11 and MAC-11 Carbine type; Intratec TEC-9 and Scorpion; Iver Johnson Enforcer model 3000; Ruger Mini-14/5F folding stock model only; Scarab Skorpion; SIG 57 AMT and 500 series; Spectre Auto Carbine and Auto Pistol; Springfield Armory BM59, SAR-48 and G-3; Sterling MK-6 and MK-7; Steyr AUG; Street Sweeper and Striker 12 revolving cylinder shotguns; USAS-12; UZI Carbine, Mini-Carbine and Pistol; Weaver Arms Nighthawk; Wilkinson "Linda" Pistol;

2) Number of illegal features.

[(A)] (i) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least [two] one of the following:

[(i)] (I) A folding or telescoping stock;
[(ii) A] (II) Any grip of the weapon, including a pistol grip, [that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon] a thumbhole stock, or any other stock, the use of which would allow an individual to grip the weapon, resulting in any finger on the trigger hand in addition to the trigger finger being directly below any portion of the action of the weapon when firing;
[(iii)] (III) A [bayonet mount] forward pistol grip;
[(iv)] (IV) A flash suppressor; or [threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and]
[(v)] (V) A grenade launcher or flare launcher

This gun fails on both counts. Sorry to tell you that.

The only way to get a gun like this into the state is:

1) Break the law
2) it is a pre-ban (1994) gun. There are plenty of pre-ban FALs.
Another choice is the Cetme. 90% of the goodness at half the cost. And all Cetme's are preban.

Hey Don, correct me if I'm wrong but the words in section 2 in brackets represent the old wording of the previous ban. So if someone is reading it below they would want to just ignore the words in brackets that are struck through and essentially read it as if they aren't there. Correct?
