JJ Racaza Takes 2008 Speed On Steel Championship

SEDRO-WOOLEY, WA — JJ Racaza set a new world record on his way to winning the overall Speed Shooting title at the World Class Steel’s Speed On Steel Championships which were held June 13-14 at the Old Bridge Rifle & Pistol Club in Old Bridge New Jersey. The match is the Northeast Regional event in the Smith & Wesson Steel Shoot Series which includes three more events later this year.

Racaza, who is among the fastest shooters in the world having won the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships in 2006, set a new world record on the stage known as Roundabout with a blistering time of 8.08 seconds using an iron-sighted pistol. The previous record of 8.29 seconds was set earlier this year at the U.S. National Championships and was done with an open pistol which features a red dot electronic optical sight. This is the only world record in the sport of Speed Shooting that is held by a shooter using an iron sighted pistol.

“JJ’s blazing speed with a pistol and his outstanding performance, especially setting a new world record with an iron-sighted pistol, shows why he is at the top of his game,” said John Soltesz, the Speed On Steel Match Director.

Facing 125 of the region’s top speed shooters, Racaza won both the overall title against all shooters in all divisions and the Iron Pistol title. Racaza’s match time of 67.95 seconds topped the Iron Pistol division with second place shooter James McGinty finishing 21.76 seconds behind Racaza with a time of 89.71. Third place in the division went to David Olhasso with a time of 92.21. Chuck Guzenski placed fourth in a time of 104.89 and just behind him with a time of 105.84 was Dave Marques in fifth.

The World Class Steel 2008 Speed On Steel Championships is one of the premier competitions in the sport of Speed Shooting which is governed by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA). Both professional and amateur shooters competed for their share of over $30,000 in cash and prizes. Shooters faced seven courses of fire and the clock in the two-day event.

Courses of fire, or stages, are made up of five steel targets which are electronically timed to one one-hundredth of a second. Competitors shoot each stage five times with their slowest run eliminated. The combined time of the best runs is their score for that stage and their combined score of all seven stages is their match score.

Championships were determined in the Rimfire Iron, Rimfire Open, Revolver Iron, Revolver Open, Compact Iron, Pistol Iron and Pistol Open divisions. A Ladies Overall champion will also be crowned.
