Kyle Stein would have turned 22 on Thursday.

But instead of a birthday celebration, his friends organized a vigil for him and 16-year-old girlfriend Sydnie Rounsville at the Florida Club condominium complex where they were fatally shot late Tuesday off Florida 16, according to news partner First Coast News.

Holding candles amid birthday balloons, they sang "Happy Birthday" to the young man and the St. Augustine High School junior.

No motive for the shooting has been released by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. But the shooting was witnessed by many people. Witnesses began dialing 911 about 6:30 p.m., sending deputies to the Royal St. Augustine Golf Club on Florida Club Boulevard.

Witnesses told investigators they saw a black pickup speeding through the parking lot being chased by a man with a gun on foot, the report said. The truck turned around and headed toward the armed man before crashing into a parked vehicle. The gunman approached the crashed truck and fired four to six shots inside, then grabbed some items before running into the nearby golf course.

Rounsville was flown by helicopter to a hospital, while Stein went by rescue unit and was declared dead. The 16-year-old later died. One of the victims named the gunman to witnesses at the shooting scene, according to the police report.
