Great gun.... I'm actually a little surprised that was imported back into the country.
Great little bullseye gun there.

HAUS DER JAGER DARMSTADY. House of Hunter Darmstadt Germany?

Jäger (singular [der] Jäger, plural [die] Jäger, German pronunciation: [ˈjɛːɡɐ]) is a German military term adopted in 1631 by the landgrave of Hesse when he first formed an elite infantry unit out of his professional hunters (Jäger) and rangers (Forstleute) in the Hessian Army

Looks like a branch of the German military had these for a pistol team or something. .pretty cool.

Interesting caliber. Can it handle +P? How many rounds in the magazine? More punch than 9mm.

T

It was purpose built for 38spl wad cutters. 5 round magazine and I'm not so sure plus P 38spl was much of a thought when these guns where developed...
While we are at it When did +P start.

It just came today so no time to shoot yet. It's a five shot magazine of 38 SPL. WC.

I had one, .38 special wadcutter only....Wont shoot any other .38 cal. round.... It is a target gun only.... I used to load 3 grains of bullseye behind a 148 gr. Wadcutter, seated flush with casemouth and get a 5 round, one hole group at 50 ft.

I've never owned one, but as said above it was designed for the wadcutter ammo. I don't imagine any other bullet style that extends beyond the case mouth would fit into the magazine.

Of course you could always fabricate dum-dum loads (reversed HBWC) and birdshot, but the gun wasn't made for this...

Bigger bullet 130-158gr vs. 110 or so. Wouldn't a +P or +P+ be the same/more pressure/power?

T

Comparing similar "level" of loads, 9mm is loaded to higher pressure and higher velocity than 38 special. Some +P+ 9mm loadings are nearly 357 magnum energy levels, and with 38 special if you are getting anywhere near that, you aren't in 38 special land, you are in 357 land. 9mm was designed for smokeless, so it has a smaller case capacity but higher pressure (from the beginning) than 38 special.

Back in the 1970s, these were extensively used for NRA 3-gun matches (.22LR, 1911-.45ACP and S&W52-.38Spl). I wouldn't recommend messing with any other cartridges or high power rounds with this gun. They are expensive collector pieces these days that were built for a singular purpose . . . putting nice round holes in paper at a match.

You wouldn't think a full wadcutter would be the most accurate bullet shape.

T

Would not call them "accurate" although they do the job are cheap to produce and easy to make.

Consider the design and use a nice clean full diameter hole cut clean in target can turn close hit near a line into a high score by cutting that line.

Bullseye targets are "big" as far as accuracy go....although my scores are not great I'm lucky to score in the high 80s...
50' target is 1" X and a 7" 4 ring
50 yard 1.75" X out to a 20" 5 ring
Rapid fire are even bigger.
Basically if you can shoot under 3moa and put you shots where they need to be you can do well .
