question,
some of the old S&W automatic pistols like the model 39, 439 and 639 have single sided safetys and some have the updated amidextrous safetys. Is it possible to take the reverse side safety lever off the amidextrous guns? I dont like the look of the double sided safetys and would like to remove mine. It appears as though its just a hex type screw that holds it in place. If you just back that screw out will it come out and be original again or do you need to purchase a new single side safety lever?

thanks,
Rob

You can take off the level on the right side by removing the screw but it looks odd that way. We had a major problem on the few ambidextrous 659's we ordered back in the eighties with retention of the level. Didn't hinder functioning but a pain replacing the parts. We stocked the hex screw and lever for that reason. Loctite was tried and failed. No wonder they changed the design.

I'd get a standard safety level to replace it purely for looksif you could.

thanks so much for the help.

not to be dumb but where can I order a standard safety level for a 639 S&W? Cant find any on gunbroker or eBay.
