Picattiny/weaver rails

Guys I need an education. I have never installed rails on my guns other than the one that came with my Ruger Mark III. I have a bushnell redot (trs-25) that I would like to try on my Remington V3 (for turkey season). How do I determine which of the two I should be using? Also, are mounting holes different for various guns? Thanks Pete

Weaver rail mount - Wikipedia

With a red dot, I would go with pic-rail.

Pic rails can take both Picatinny and Weaver mounts; Weaver rails only take Weaver mounts.

How about the holes for mounting? I looked at the rail for my ruger. I do not believe the holes are in the same place as my shotgun.

Actually, I think I am wrong. Just need to shift it around and at least two holes will line up. I also believe it is a weaver rail.
