Phone saves man from gunshot

An American man mowing his lawn was hit in the chest by a .45 calibre bullet which lodged in his mobile phone, likely saving his life.

R.J. Richard says he doesn't normally put the phone in his chest pocket.

The 68-year-old man from Covington, Louisiana, was mowing the lawn on his 2ha property when a stray bullet from nearby woods struck that cell phone. He figured a rock kicked up by his tractor hit him.

That is, until he took out the phone and a .45-calibre bullet fell from its case.

Richard told The Times-Picayune of New Orleans he doesn't think it was a coincidence, either.

"I look at this as God telling me to put my cell phone in that pocket, and I'm grateful and humbled," he said.

Doctors told Richard the bullet came at an angle, which along with the cell phone probably prevented serious injury.

Deputies are investigating the case, St Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain said. He said the case should serve as a serious warning that people should consider the consequences before firing a gun.

However, Strain said investigators don't believe the shooting was intentional.

"consider the consequenes" - let's make a list and check it twice - S*** happens. He should have considered the consequences of mowing his grass where hunters hunt...or when he drives his car on the road...

We really need to consider the consequences of living in this physical world...

The real question is....where in the hell did he get a motorola razor thats bulletproof? hell, i look at mine the wrong way and it scratches, cracks, or shuts off. i'm jealous!

They did this on Mythbusters - or maybe it was an ipod. Anyway it didn't come close to stopping a bullet. The energy in that round must have been just about spent.

It was likely a ricochet which had bled off a lot of energy by that point.

So, what makes him think it didn't get kicked up by the lawnmower?

On TV he said he was reaching over to pick up a rusty bird feeder while driving his lawnmower.

He also recently moved to the area where this happened.

He said "experts" told him if the bullet didn't hit the phone he would be dead for sure.
