I am reloading , I am using only Hornady Die Sets along with the Powder Cop Die.

I am planning on reloading the following pistol and 1 rifle calibers, 45, 40, 41 and 223.

My question is a quick one, as far as the pistol calibers are concerned. Do I need the TAPER CRIMP Die's for 40 & 45 cal?

Thanks in Advance
Bruce

Yes. Taper crimp only on autoloader cartridges.

"Revolver" cartridges such as .38 Special, .357 Mag, .44 Spl/Mag, etc get a roll crimp.

Even with the taper crimp, make sure you don't overdo it. The taper "crimp" is not supposed to hold the bullet in the case, it should only flatten out the belling from the expander die enough so that the round will chamber.

Jim's answer is right on. With taper crimp you want it to chamber well and not mush the mouth of the case into the bullet at all. It's the case tension that holds the bullet not the taper crimp.

Lee dies

The Lee factory crimp dies i have for 45acp and 9mm do not crimp

but reshape the shell case to the manufacturers spec for the

barrel it fits into. At least thats the explanation the Lee tech
gave me when i called. For autoloaders one should use the factory
die.
