One man was dead and an elderly couple was injured after gunfire erupted in a quiet neighborhood Sunday morning, according to the residents of Wembley Avenue.

Residents of the neighborhood, just off of Miss. 613 slightly north of Interstate 10, said the unknown man ran from house to house knocking on doors and asking for a ride to a bus station at about 11:30 a.m.

He was turned away from at least two houses and ran to 3813 Wembley, the home of Charles and Altman Ray, residents said.

"He picked the wrong man to mess with," said Johnny Huddleston, the Rays' son-in-law who lives two-doors down.

"He apparently took his shirt off and wrapped it around his hand to ring the doorbell," Huddleston said. "He didn't get an answer and went around to the back. My father-in-law is ex-military and will not stand for nonsense. Somehow the man ended up shot to death and my in-laws were shot, too."

Cornelious Ferrande, 23, of New Orleans, has been identified as the man who was shot and killed on Wembley Avenue Sunday, authorities said Monday.

Savage said Ferrande was shot one time in the chest and homeowners Charles and Altman "Nita" Ray were also shot.

"Mr. Ray was shot in the hand and Mrs. Ray was shot in the face," Savage said. "Ferrande was pronounced dead at the scene on the front porch."

Charles Ray, 74, was treated and released from Singing River Hospital Sunday afternoon. Nita Ray, 66, was sent to a Jackson hospital for cosmetic treatment, Savage said.

"We're told she will be fine," he added.

The detective said no criminal charges would be filed against the Rays at this time.

Just days before his own violent death, police say Cornelius Ferrande committed two murders and an armed robbery.

Detectives say ballistics from Ferrande's gun link him to the violent crimes.

Two days later, police say Ferrande was going door to door in Moss Point, MS asking for money and a ride to the bus station.

When he tried to force his way into an elderly couple's home, the elderly man pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest. Ferrande died.

The NOPD says ballistic tests show that Ferrande's gun was used to committ the two murders in New Orleans.

They also matched his picture to surveilance video.....
