Yes, they had some cops getting killed with AK's but I imagine it wasn't that high but they had to do something.

From 1994 through 2003 there were 568 law enforcement officers killed with all firearms. Most of those (425) were with handguns, primarily 9mm and .38 Special. Of the 109 killed with rifles, 44 were 7.62x39. (The FBI reports break down deaths by a lot of variables, including type of firearm and caliber, but not model.)
