A little over 10 years ago, one of my father's patients gave him two pistols he had acquired in WWII. One is a P08 and the other is a P38. He's never brought it up, but I got to thinking the other day about where these guns have been. Is there anyway to trace these guns back to where they came from? Specifically, their years of service, and any other kind of detailed information.

I'm no expert, but in my limited research I've heard that it is generally difficult to impossible to trace back individual records on German wartime weapons. The best source of info would be the vet who brought them back, as he'd have known where and how he'd acquired them. Otherwise, the only story the pistol itself will tell is where and when it was manufactured, and, generally, for what organization (Waffenamt and other acceptance stamps & proofmarks).

Here are a couple of resources I've looked at for P.08 and P.38 info:

Good luck!

Based on the markings, you can tell exactly when/where they were made. The Luger is one of the more well-documented pistols in existence. Use Google and you'll find plenty of reading material.

Could it be?

My late Father in Law from Lowell,MA was US NAVY Anphibous and landed at Normandy on DDay and did the Battle of the Buldge and other notable spots.

They had five children in his Famialy and all Were in the NAVY in WWII. I have a great Photo of one of his Brothers who was a Pacific Fighter Pilot and he was shot down. He is floating in the water next to his plane and a guy off of a ship took his photo. He survived the crash and wrote to his mom on the photo. Having a good time, Got to go swimming today... Ill have to dig up that photo.

He My Father in Law, Theophile) brought back a German Naval Officers Luger from Europe( He got it from the Original Owner who not longer had need of it) that sat in his house for years until we were talking about them one day. He was going to show it to me when my Mother-in Law told him that she gave it away because she did not want it in the house.

Could have been worth some big bucks.

Well she passed away also and Ill never know who she gave it to.

So,, Maybe thats your History? Lowell, Chelmsford? I know they did not travel far.

Also I had loaned a nice Anzhutz .22 to my Late Unckle Shorty to shoot dogs that were chasing his cattle at his farm in Lowell, MA next to the State Forest. When He died someone cleaned out his house and took all his guns and my Anshultz. Ill never know where that went? Tough old fellow. Drank a pint of Wiskey every day and Smoked Camels. He dies in his nightys of a shotgun blast from some home invader they never caught.

Young girl with eyes like potatoes. Is that a Good thing?
