Are they two letters followed by numbers in the 10000-19999 range?
That would be the serial numbers used by ROF Maltby. Maltby's prefixes were single letters A-Z and AA through BZ.

It is a Maltby the markings are top line M1944, below is the serial#, and below that is a BU. My question is, what is the meaning of the BU ? Is it just a series number ?
