How to make gun stock engraving "pop" (visually)?

I have a couple rifles with engraved wood stocks. It's difficult/impossible to clean the engraved areas because whatever cleaning product I use gets "stuck" in the bare wood and within the lines of the engraving and darkens the wood.

Does anyone here have a product they can recommend which will make the engraving contrast more with the stock to make it easier to see? And no, I don't want to paint or fill the engraving.

I tried a small bit of wax in a corner and immediately regretted it, now I have white wax chunks stuck inside.

Toothbrush and linseed oil?

Blow dryer to heat up the wax so it will flow. Then soft bristle brush to buff it.

Is it dirty? Some warm dish soapy water does wonders to clean dirt and grime off. Then maybe a light application of tung oil ?
