Was there for some raccoon hunting, and had to cut out early because my new spotlight died much faster than it should have.

So I called off the hunt after a couple hours because my headlamp also wasn't strong enough. As I was walking back to the jeep I was being shadowed by a coyote Mildly clever one as well, hung back far enough to prevent me from getting a clean shot, and only moved when I did. Was a little creepy as it followed me for at least a mile.

That is a bit creepy.

What kind of light was it so the rest of us can avoid it?

The best light I have ever bought is an Olight M20S with an S2 LED (Not R5 or XP-L). The thing never fails and never runs out of batteries.

It was a cheapo because I wasn't able to find any spots any physical location I went, so I got this:
http://www.homedepot.com/buy/brinkmann-workforce-halogen-spotlight-205403.html

Lasted maybe 25 minutes continuous, being generous: 35 minutes. Was charging for 3 days prior to using it.

It was a little creepy to get followed like that, I knew it was fine, all things considered just a touch creepy.

I've had that happen a few times walking down the road in the dark. First you hear 1 set of claws clicking on the pavement and snapping twigs and its no big deal. It gets creepy when you hear 3 or 4 sets of claws clicking along behind you [shocked]

$8.98 and it didn't work well?

Go figure eh? Apparently, it's hard to find a decent spotlight, so I'm just going to mailorder one.

jfcasey - that wouldn't be pleasant.

Now the headlamp that didn't have enough oomph for much was a surprise, it's one I got on rec for a guy who has done the AT twice.

May have been the full moon, but the light was minimally contributing to visibility on the trail.

The coyote was not after you. He was waiting for you to kill him something for dinner. It was the wild version of the dog begging at the table.

They are not stupid. They know humans have food or provide food to them. Same as a bear. Bears do not want to eat you. They just want your picnic basket.

I have a similar headlamp, its black diamond just different model, but got it at ems for 20$ or so and it works great, might just need new batteries as its noticably dimmer when the batteries are low.
this is the one I have: http://www.ems.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3995818

Youre not going to be able to do much more than navigate with a headlamp though, so picking up a decent spotlight would be your best course of action.

Yeah, I opened a new pack of energizer lithiums just for the hunt. I figured, I'd kill them off during the night. Might be time for a new headlamp too. [smile]

MACGYVR - I wasn't worried even if it was creepy. I was more interested in getting a clear shot. I have a friend in lowcountry getting a few yote, coon, and possum recipes together for me.
