I am wondering if anyone here has experience selling handguns FTF in maine. I am looking to sell a couple pistols to finance some new toys and I don't want to F-up.

My advice in selling hand guns to people you do not know is to make sure they are Maine residents and make sure they are over 21. I would put into any ad you place that the buyer must provide a Maine DL. I would also copy down the info from the DL into a bill of sale and have you and the buyer sign it with the serial number and description of the handgun.

There have been cases of people from away coming up to Maine and buying guns from Uncle Henry's to sell illegally out of state. This will cover your ass and deter the wrong kind of buyer.

you can possess/sell a handgun at age 18 in Maine as far as i know...

I believe you are right, unless they changed the state law. The 21 only applies to sales from an FFL, where fed law applies. It is my humble opinion though, that if you do not know the 18 year old, even though it is legal, I would not make the sale as a means to just cover your ass.
