(04/08/07 -- RALEIGH) - Elizabeth Edwards says she is scared of the "rabid, rabid Republican" who owns property across the street from her Orange County home -- and she doesn't want her kids going near the gun-toting neighbor.

Edwards, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, particularly recalls the time neighbor Monty Johnson brought out a gun while chasing workers investigating a right of way off his property. The Edwards family has yet to meet Johnson in person.

"I wouldn't be nice to him anyway," Edwards said in an interview. "I don't want my kids anywhere near some guy who when he doesn't like somebody, the first thing he does is pull a gun out. It scares the business out of me."

But Johnson defended the occasion he brandished a gun, saying those on his land didn't have the proper approval.

"I use the gun for protection, and I considered that an appropriate time," Johnson said. "Sometimes you have to take drastic measures."

Edwards views Johnson as a "rabid, rabid Republican" who refuses to clean up his "slummy" property just to spite her family, whose lavish 28,000-square-foot estate is nearby on 102 wooded acres.

Johnson, 55, acknowledges his Republican roots. But he takes offense to the suggestion he has purposefully left his property, including an old garage that he leases for use as a car shop, in dilapidated condition.

Johnson said he has lived his entire life on the property, which he said his family purchased before the Great Depression. He said he's spent a lot of money to try and fix up the 42-acre tract.

"I have to budget. I have to leave within my means," Johnson said. "I don't have millions of dollars to fix the place."

Johnson, who has posted a "Go Rudy Giuliani 2008" sign on a fence just 100 feet from the entrance to the Edwards' driveway, has criticized Edwards for the scale of their nearby home. The property and home, which includes an indoor basketball court, an indoor handball court and an indoor pool, is valued at $5.3 million.

The Edwardses are still putting the final touches on the property, which they purchased in 2003.

"I thought he was supposed to be for the poor people," Johnson said. "But does he ever socialize with any poor people? He doesn't speak to me."

Johnson said he has put his property on the market, in part blaming the high property taxes for his decision to leave. He also wants to move for another reason.

"I don't want to live somewhere where someone's always complaining about me," he said.

I can't see her going with her husband to visit with "rabid, rabid Palestinians" never mind people that live across the street from her.

Elitism - it's not just for breakfast anymore.

"...she doesn't want her kids going near the gun-toting neighbor."

I wonder if she was OK with her kids being in close proximity to the gun-toting Secret Sevice agents assigned to protect her husband during his failed VP campaign.

"The Edwards family has yet to meet Johnson in person."

Afraid of a person she's never met. Nice to see prejudice and ignorance are still thriving amongst the nation's leftists.

"I wouldn't be nice to him anyway," Edwards said in an interview.

Ah yes, the party of compassion and social justice.

I don't want my kids anywhere near some guy who when he doesn't like somebody, the first thing he does is pull a gun out.

Really! Why he didn't just call his armed bodyguard on his cell phone simply boggles my mind.

Edwards views Johnson as a "rabid, rabid Republican" who refuses to clean up his "slummy" property just to spite her family, whose lavish 8,000-square-foot estate is nearby on 102 wooded acres.

"I have to budget. I have to leave within my means," Johnson said.

EWWWW!!! POOR PEOPLE!!!

What an elitist [CENSORED].

Do us a favor, Liz. Stay in your America, and keep your husband and his socialist agenda the hell out of mine.

What a sob story, she has to live next to REAL americans who value their rights and would protect themselves and probably even HER with their 2nd Amendment rights [rolleyes]

Can't these people just go away?

1) John Edwards is a prissy turd - a man's hair just shouldn't look that good EVER.

2) Lizzy has gotta be dumber than a stump to say something like this to the press. I feel sorry for her and the cancer, but shut up and stay in your 28,000SF O.C. retreat, lock the doors, and again, shut the "F" up.

OR, get out there, meet the unwashed masses trying to work to earn enough everyday to pay the rent this month, or the pay the mortgage so their kids aren't out on the street! AND, really try and "get it"

Dunno about the case of the surveyors, but back in my youth my mother came running to my father and I scared out of her wits. We looked out the window and there was a teenage kid dressed in normal clothes holding a machette. He then walked up through our yard into the woods and met up with another kid with a machete.

Being Democrat GFWs we cowered and stayed low so they wouldn't see us and called the police.

The police came and it turned out they were survayors and they had left their yellow vests in the truck up the road.

If a scenario like that happened today I might react the same way as Mr. Johnson.

Arrrr

the neighbor sounds like a loon too. he's got some serious class envy issues, whining that the Edward's are successful. as far as i know Edward's earned his dough, it wasn't handed to him like Bush or married it like Kerry. if you have class envy issues, at least have the brains to player hate the inherited wealth, not the self made men.

Also- he put a Rudy sign up. That's disturbing because rudy is a liberal nutjob so this "republican" isn't very bright and it's no doubt meant to be disrespectful to his neighbor. not very christian act.

throw in the wack job brandished a firearm and his off the wall comments and it's not hard to see why Ms. Edwards is scared of the guy, he's an over emoting liberal just like her, he's just a poor one.

Of course making any comment about the reason that one can't spiff up his property to the Edwards' standards is an obvious indication of class envy. And since it's a well known fact that everybody in the Carolinas other than the Edwards and a few others are racist rednecks who, like every other Republican in the country, could never actually support Giuliani, it's obvious that this guy simply put up the sign out of hate. Finally, since a good liberal such as Mrs Edwards couldn't possibly have any negative emotional feelings involving firearms, so we have to simply take her description of the "brandishing" as an objective, informed and unbiased description of the actual event, thus proving conclusively that he's a certifiable wack job. Finally, his complaint about high taxes is the give-away that he's really a closet liberal. Please excuse me while I open up another bottle of whatever it is I've been drinking all day. [rolleyes]

Yep, there's a reason he's a "former" senator. Probably lost touch with his constituants living in that measly 28,000 sq ft home. Geez, my summer cottage is bigger then that. [rolleyes]

I'd say neither party is totally right or wrong in this issue, the neightbor sounds a little wierd, and the Edwards' are, of course, wealthy-wierd and stunningly unapolgetic elitists to boot, apparently.

I'd caution putting too much blame on people with just the info presented in this article, after all, we know the accuraccy and unbiasedness of media is pretty low.

We don't know the facts really, IMO.
