I've never understood the appeal to the Planet of the Apes movies, they always struck me as kind of dumb, like up there with Starship Troopers, just not nearly as funny.

If it was a chimp and not a monkey, and if a bonobo chimp, I assume this was sexual in nature. Bonobos are highly sexual and will copulate to say hello, literally. They copulate with everyone and everything. Rarely to completion, and a lot of times it's simulated.
