The state House of Representatives gave final approval Tuesday, by a vote of 113 to 34, to a bill providing financial credits to hunters and fishermen who had purchased their licenses before the General Assembly last month rolled back some recent fee increases.

The measure now goes to Gov. M. Jodi Rell for her signature.

Last year, lawmakers approved increases in hunting and fishing fees -- and, when those increases took effect this past October, there was an outcry. Last month, lawmakers acknowledged that they had made a mistake; they reduced fishing fees from $40 to $28 and hunting fees from $28 to $19.

The bill, if signed by Rell, would give credits to hunters and fishermen who had paid their fees early at the raised rates approved last year. They would get credits on their fees for the following year, to make up the difference between the higher amount they paid and the newly rolled-back fee.

The bill also would permit hunters to shoot deer with pistols or revolvers during regular hunting season.
