(CNN) -- The gunman who killed 13 people at an immigrant services center fired 98 shots in a minute or so, the police chief in Binghamton, New York, said Wednesday.
Police are trying to determine why Jiverly Wong picked the American Civic Association as his target Friday.

Jiverly Wong, a 41-year-old Vietnamese immigrant from an ethnic Chinese family, fired 87 shots from a 9 mm pistol and 11 shots from a .45-caliber handgun, Chief Joseph Zikuski told CNN.

Investigators believe the victims died almost instantly, Zikuski said.

Wong was an "accomplished marksman" who frequented a shooting range in Binghamton, the chief said, and he bragged to others that he had fired more than 10,000 rounds.

Wong strode into the American Civic Association on Friday, entered a classroom and started shooting, investigators said.

Wong had been taking English classes at the association, which helps immigrants and refugees from around the world. He was upset about recently losing a job, but police are still trying to determine why he chose to open fire at the association, Zikuski said.

The police chief said that "it's not unreasonable to think" that Wong fired his 98 shots "in just over a minute" before he shot and killed himself in the classroom.

Investigators have found that Wong came to the United States in the late 1980s, lived in Binghamton before moving to California in the early 1990s and returned to Binghamton in July 2007, Zikuski said. He became a U.S. citizen in 1995. He had married and divorced while living in California and had been convicted on a misdemeanor charge of writing bad checks there, the chief said.

At the scene of Friday's shooting, police found two semiautomatic handguns -- a .45-caliber and a 9 mm -- that were licensed to Wong.

Wong had attempted to purchase "a number of firearms," the chief said. Purchasing a gun in New York takes about two weeks, Zikuski said, and Wong would go back to a store during that period, "cancel that order and purchase another one."

Wong also was wearing body armor when he went on his spree, and since New York limits body armor purchases to law enforcement, "We're looking into that," Zikuski said.

The first funerals for the victims were held Sunday afternoon at a local mosque. An interfaith memorial service for all the victims was held Sunday evening, and hundreds of people took part in a candlelight vigil afterward.

"In a strange way," Binghamton Mayor Matthew Ryan said, "this tragedy has brought everyone together."

No attempt at anything other than to feed the semi-auto ban Obama's crew want. CNN, I have no respect for you at all. I knew a CNN employee who told another message board I was on that Heller gave us all a "new" right. Pretty much sums up where they come from I guess.

CNN, you are the flaming douche of news.

During the Iraq war, I began my long boycott of CNN as I explained to them they had become the "terrorist advertising network"...

They would post glamor shots of kidnappers and terrorists who had killed, maimed and kidnapped people on their front page...

They sensationalized the violence and fed the need of the terrorists to get their message out... As such, they were acting against our national interests and in cooperation with the terrorists... Terrorism doesn't work without the media's help...

Other outlets managed to present the kidnappings and bombings in a much more low-key and appropriate manner. I am not advocating ignorance of these acts...

I had for many years prior to that used cnn.com as my default web home page as a reliable, fast loading reasonable place to start - thus giving them many thousands of hits they would not otherwise have had...

Since then, I don't visit their website and I avoid watching their news channel... I get my news elsewhere...

I have the feeds of many news groups running on my home page, this one really caught my eye. There is not one shadow of a doubt that this story has an ulterior motive, the rounds per minute quote. I was just disgusted a little more than normal with them.

Did anybody else catch this? Also said 87 from a 9mm and 11 from a .45 to make 98. That seems like a lot of rapid fire and reloading unless he had ample hi-cap magazines.

I know the police here have been under fire for not going in when they arrived and they stated all shooting was over in one minute. It will be interesting to see how the investigation plays out.

All the more reason to ban a-salt rifles.

Somewhere between 7-10 spare 9mm mags and 1-2 45 mags?

Yep, that line was my point in posting, though I wasn't thinking about the police response so much as the CNN hard-on for a gun ban.

I think CNN is saying, in a not subliminal way, that all of this is the fault of his access to semi-auto pistols.

What? How can that be? You mean someone with criminal intent FAILED to obey LAWS set in place for the average law abiding citizen? Blasphemy! [rolleyes] CNN Sucks.

Also, what exactly is this clown Zikuski "looking into"?

10,000 rounds?
Some of us here would call that a good weekend.
