A jewelry store clerk shot and killed two suspected robbers during an attempted heist Friday morning, authorities said.
According to investigators, two suspects walked inside the Monaco Jewelers in the Capistrano Beach shopping Center on Doheny Park Road at 11:30 Friday morning and demanded cash and jewelry while a third suspect waited outside.
"At some point in the robbery inside the store, one of the employees opened fire with a handgun, striking two of the three suspects,'' Sheriff's Lt. Steve Doan said, noting that all of the bandits were wearing masks and gloves.....

Deputies seized a silver Toyota they believe the suspects drove to the jewelry store, and authorities interviewed Monaco employees and watched surveillance camera tape, Doan said.
This wasn't Monaco's first brush with criminals. On July 4, 2009, someone broke into the store through the roof, escaping with $6 million in merchandise, according to KTLA. It was believed to be the largest burglary in Orange County history at the time.....

Officials said that the robbery was connected to holdups on Jan. 20 at Pacific Park Jewelers, 27271 La Paz Road, Laguna Niguel and Feb. 1 at
Rita's Jewelry, 24451 Alicia Pkwy, Mission Viejo.

It wasn't immediately clear if the hold-up was connected to three other jewelry store heists in the past several months in south Orange County, Doan said.
Robbers stole about $150,000 in valuables from Jared Galleria of Jewelry, 28241 Marguerite Parkway, in a takeover-style robbery on March 5.
In the Rita's Jewelry heist, the store's owner was pistol-whipped, and in the Pacific Park heist, a co-owner ran after a suspect and opened fire.
