Swiss await showdown over guns and bullets

Under Swiss law all able-bodied men are issued with a rifle and 50 rounds of ammunition

Switzerland is preparing for a lively debate this summer over its long-standing tradition of keeping army guns and ammunition at home.

Opposition to its guns-at-home culture seems to have gained momentum and critics are launching a people's initiative on the issue.

Attitudes towards firearms may be changing in Switzerland, which is well known for its militia army, strong traditions and liberal gun laws. A recent survey found that two out of three Swiss want to ban army weapons from private households.

Centre-left political parties and pacifist groups are hoping to build on these signs of public disapproval to force a nationwide vote. They are due to start collecting signatures for a people's initiative from August this year.

The initiative is calling for army weapons to remain in the barracks, a national gun register, a ban on private individuals buying or owning particularly dangerous guns such as automatic weapons or pump-action shotguns, and tighter controls on those who say they need to carry a firearm.

Green parliamentarian Jo Lang, who is behind the proposal, argues that keeping an army gun at home is "a major security risk" and that "there are no practical arguments - only ideological ones".

"Every year about 300 people die from army-issue guns in Switzerland. The majority of cases are suicides, but there are also family tragedies," he told swissinfo.

Lang has first-hand experience of the dangers of putting a gun in the wrong hands. In 2001 he was in Zug's cantonal parliament when a gunman shot and killed 14 people with a rifle, before turning it on himself.

"Most people have a gun not because they like it, but because they have to take it home," he said.....................................

I don’t know if the Brady Bunch are helping the anti gun agenda of some Swiss anti gun groups, but I can tell you they are using Brady Bunch tactics, which is to say they are simply inventing “facts” and data that simply don’t exist.

I was just listening to the BBC about the “Swiss gun issue” and they stated that (1) the only country with higher suicide rates than the Swiss is the US* and (2) at least once per month on average a Swiss citizen takes his army issued assault rifles and kills his entire family.

I kid you not, and I am not paraphrasing either, They stated exactly that. We know the first claim is wrong, and easy to prove wrong, and the second claim may be a little harder to confirm, but is clearly a fabrication.

So, inventing data/facts from thin air is alive and well. How these people sleep at night is a mystery to me, but there you have it….

* I have the distinct feeling what they meant to say was that the US had a higher rate of suicide using a gun as the method of suicide, but are either too stupid or too intellectually dishonest to make that distinction and assume once out there as “fact” via the media know it will be hard to correct.

As they've demonstrated time and again, these two traits are by no means mutually exclusive, though we continue to take the high road, accepting the possibility that only one need apply in their case.

Bradyites are probably focusing on Switzerland because it's the
only place on that whole damn continent that hasn't gone full blown
anti yet. They want to "finiish off" europe in terms of adding
it to the "Soros Global Consortium" in an effort to make the US look
like the "odd man out" WRT ownership of small arms by private
citizens.

Apparently if you think that your goal is noble, than the ends justify the means. In their case the goal is complete subjugation of the public to the ruling elites. Or at least historically that's where disarmament has lead in every case.

“Those who do not view armed self defense as a basic human right, ignore the mass graves of those who died at the hands of tyrants.”

Although I hate overconfidence, I put very little stock in the ability of left wing parties to carry their agenda in Switzerland.

This appears to be a Green Party initiative, which is not exactly a powerhouse (but has been growing). The Social Democrats (every European nation seems to have a party called that) are leftist and far more powerful, and at least one of their leaders, Boris Banga, appears to be pushing in that direction as well. The big problem for these folks is a group called Pro Tell, that seems to have much of the power of the NRA, coupled with a powerful national symbol (William Tell). Pro Tell has been instrumental in stopping previous anti-gun laws. Also, the Swiss government is very decentralized, and it is not entirely clear that the national government can pull this off.

Also, I agree that the “Big Lie” Brady approach is at work here, but the Swiss inhabit a small country (about 7.5 million people), and it is harder to pull off that kind of misdirection in a smaller community.

I remember when the press trumpeted in the early 1980s that 52% of Americans favored banning all handguns, at least, according to polls. It was only a matter of time before it happened.

Ha! [rolleyes]
