barrel length and velocity loss

If any one is interested, I brought 2 M1A rifles to the range to compare velocity loss, muzzle blast and recoil. One was a standard length and the other was the Socom II. The Socom lost about 200 fps. I didn't notice any great difference in recoil or blast. I'm guessing that if forced to shoot without hearing protection, the 16 1/4" barrel of the Socom would be louder than the standard but I think that the .308 is loud enough that either would cause hearing damage. I don't plan to test that theory.
