Edward James Rose was supposed to begin trial Friday morning in Maricopa County Superior Court for the 2007 shooting death of Phoenix police Officer George Cortez Jr.

Instead, he pleaded guilty on all counts: first-degree murder, conspiracy, fraud, theft, identity theft, forgery and burglary.

But he still must face a jury to determine whether he is sentenced to death or to life in prison.....

R.I.P. Officer George Cortez Jr. [halfmast]

From the story:

On June 27, 2007, Rose and his girlfriend, Norma Lopez, walked into a check-cashing store in the 8200 block of West McDowell Road in Phoenix to try to pass a forged $430 check.

Rose had stolen a business checkbook from a pickup truck, and he, Lopez and as many as 14 other people wrote checks on the account.

The day was Lopez's 19th birthday, and she and Rose were trying to get money to celebrate. Store personnel called police, and Cortez, 23, responded.

In the surveillance video, Cortez is seen walking in and snapping handcuffs on Rose's arm from behind. Rose pulls a gun from his belt and shoots Cortez in the face, killing him.

The two fled. Lopez helped Rose cut off the handcuffs. They were arrested the next day.

He murdered a man over $430.
